Rules for Life Success

Emotional & Physical Health & Well-Being

Improving your emotional health can be a rewarding experience, benefiting all aspects of your life, including boosting your mood, building resilience, and adding to your overall enjoyment of life.

What is emotional health?

  •  A sense of contentment.

  •  A zest for living and the ability to laugh and have fun.

  •  Ability to deal with stress and bounce back from adversity.

  •  A sense of meaning and purpose, in activities and relationships.

  •  Flexibility to learn new things and adapt to change.

  •  Balance in life between work and play.

  •  Ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships.

  •  Self confidence, self-worth and high self-esteem.

If you do an inventory of all that is listed above – most people would fall short! It is merely a template of characteristics one might strive for.

Physical health is related to emotional health:

  • Get enough rest – everyone is different – know your physical cues.

  • Learn about and practice good nutrition.

  • Exercise (different for everyone). Walking daily might be perfect for one individual while sweating in the gym is ideal for another.

  • Limit alcohol, cigarettes and drugs.

Strategies for emotional health:

  •  Practice self-discipline.

  •  Discover new things.

  •  Enjoy nature and or art.

  •  Learn to manage stress levels (that MAY TAKE PRACTICE).

  •  Limit unhealthy habits – like worrying, anxiety, depression, etc….you may need to find a good therapist to help you work through those issues.

  •  Engage in creative and meaningful work.

  •  Get a pet!

  •  Make time for meditation, reflection or contemplation.

  •  Take time out for leisure.

  •  Connect with others – get away from the computer!

  •  Volunteer.

  •  Join an organization or group.

All of these items require reflection and work for some individuals. Take an inventory and decide what needs more work and how you can learn from other things that you do well! Life is a true learning process and no matter where we are in life – we can always grow! As George Eliot said: “It is never too late to be what you might have been.”
